What to Bring to Your First Run Club

The stress-free checklist for day one.

Your first run club is 90% nerves, 10% running. The good news: you don't need much to show up. A decent pair of trainers, a water bottle, and a willingness to say hi will carry you through. That said, there are a few small items that make the difference between a stressful first session and a fun one. Here's the checklist we give every first-timer — built from conversations with regulars at urban run clubs from New York to London. Bring these, leave the rest.

Handheld Water Bottle

For anything over 5km, bring water. Most run clubs have water stops but you cannot assume. A small handheld is unobtrusive and solves the problem for new members.

Body Glide Original

The item nobody warns first-timers about. Apply to inner thighs and under arms 10 minutes before the run. Prevents the kind of chafing that ruins your evening — and you'll thank us.

Tips

  • 1.

Arrive 10 minutes early. This is when introductions happen — walk up to the group leader, say it is your first time, and they will bring you into the circle. Showing up at the exact start time means running alone.

  • 2.

Wear something with pockets if you do not own a running belt — leggings with a phone pocket, or shorts with a zip pocket. Your first run club is not the place to run while holding your phone.

  • 3.

Bring cash or card for post-run coffee. Most clubs end at a café — it is part of the ritual, and it is where you will actually meet people. Budget £5 / $6 on top of the run itself.

  • 4.

Don't overthink the kit. You can upgrade gear after your second or third session once you see what others wear. For the first run, borrow, wear what you have, and focus on introducing yourself.
